The legendary Ellis Maples, a prodigy of the great Donald Ross designed the two championship golf courses at Whispering Pines Country Club with a unique feature…diversity!  Best stated in Pinehurst Magazine by golf writer Lee Pace, “History will certainly determine Ellis Maples’ place, and he will certainly be standing shoulder to shoulder with Donald Ross, Allistar Mackenzie, A.W. Tillinghast and the Legends of Golf Course Design”.

The East Course and its length combined with the subtle terrain changes will make you hit every club in your bag.  On the other hand, the West Course will remind you of a “Northeastern Country Club” with the elevation changes and  towering oak trees that line the fairways.  The West is not as demanding as the East, but requires some “shotmaking” with smaller greens.

The East Course, finished in 1962 is an Ellis Maples classic.  “As good as it gets”, is a term often heard from golfers, members and guests when they play the East.

The West Course opened in 1972 and offers the tranquil beauty of ancient hardwoods as Ellis Maples utilizes the natural contours to challenge the best of players.  Length is not as important on the West, however a premium is placed on strategic accuracy and shot placement.  Ofter referred to as “the thinking man’s golf course”, you are constantly playing two shots ahead in order to navigate this Ellis Maples masterpiece.
